Total consumption of natural gas in Oman rose 11.9 per cent to 41,844mn cubic meters (mncm) during the first 11 months of 2018 against 37,399mncm in the same period of last year.

The growth in total consumption was mainly driven by increased natural gas demand in industrial sector and oil fields, figures released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) showed.

Oman produced and imported a total of 41,844mncm natural gas to meet the country’s demand during January–November period of 2018, which is 11.9 per cent higher compared to the total of production and imports in the previous year.

Industrial projects, the biggest natural gas consumer sector in the sultanate, recorded nearly 20 per cent jump in gas consumption at 25,131mncm in the first 11 months of this year compared to the same period a year ago.

Oman’s industrial sector recorded a growth of 5.7 per cent in activity during the first half of this year, while manufacturing sector grew 13.7 per cent, as per the nominal gross domestic product (GDP) figures published by NCSI recently.

On the other hand, gas usage in the oil fields increased 8.4 per cent to 8,751mncm this year against 8,073mncm in 2017.

Gas consumption in power generation projects marginally increased 0.2 per cent to 7,761mncm compared to the previous year.

As per the recently released nominal GDP figures, the value of Oman’s natural gas production nearly doubled to RO1.25bn in the first half of 2018 compared to RO635mn in the corresponding period of 2017.
