Dubai’s Public Prosecutor has called for the bus driver responsible for a crash that claimed 17 lives to be jailed for seven years.

Public Prosecution-Dubai has sent the case to court demanding the Omani driver also pays Dh3,400,000 in compensation to the families of the deceased and the 13 people injured.

The Mwasalat bus ploughed straight through a steel barrier on June 6, during a scheduled journey between Muscat in Oman and Dubai in the UAE.

Speaking to Times of Oman, Ahmad bin Ali Al Bulushi, CEO of Mwasalat, said : “We remain in close contact with all relevant UAE authorities. Our own investigations are ongoing.”

In a statement, Dubai Public Prosecution said: “Dubai Traffic Prosecution orders to refer the Omani driver to Dubai Traffic Court after he was charged with causing the death of 17 passengers and injuring 13 people with varying body injuries and damage due to the use of the vehicle as these are traffic offences.

“The prosecution shall seek to apply the penalties provided for in the law against the driver, in accordance with the federal laws in force, penalties, traffic and blood money- as the penalty is imprisonment of seven years as well as fine, in addition to oblige him to pay a sum of Dh3,400,000 to the heirs of the deceased as a result of the incident.”

Officials at Oman’s Embassy in Abu Dhabi said that they are monitoring the case.

“The embassy is following up the decision of the Dubai Public Prosecution in connection with the bus accident and referring the company’s driver case to the judiciary. The procedure was not a judgment of the competent court, as it has not yet considered the case.

“The embassy continues to follow up the relevant authorities in everything related to their details.”

The bus crashed on Mohammad Bin Zayed road in Dubai on June 6, 2019. The victims were from the Sultanate of Oman, India and Europe.
