ACCIDENTS FALL BY 40.4% IN JULY THIS YEAR: NCSI

The number of road accidents in Oman dropped by 40.4 per cent till the end of July this year as compared to the same period in 2017.

According to statistics released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), while July saw 215 accidents this year, June witnessed 222 and May as many as 217 cases.

Among the governorates, Muscat recorded the highest rate of road accidents at 28.4 per cent in July this year, followed by Dhofar (17.2 per cent), Dakhliyah (11.2 per cent) and North and South Batinah (10.7 per cent) each.

The rate of accidents in the rest of the governorates reached 21.8 per cent.

There was an overall reduction in the number of deaths among both Omanis and expatriates by 31.1 per cent in July this year compared to July 2017.

As many as 42 people (33 Omanis and nine expatriates) were killed due to road traffic accidents in July this year as compared to May (45) and June (65).

Those injured in accidents comprised 266 people (200 Omanis and 66 expatriates) in July this year. Of the total number of accidents, 52 per cent took place at night, and 48 per cent during the day.
